Football offers more betting markets than almost any other sport. From the straightforward match result to the niche corner handicap, each market has its own characteristics and suits different betting styles. Here is a rundown of the main markets and how they work.
Match Result (1X2)
The simplest and most popular market. You back a home win (1), draw (X) or away win (2). The bookmaker prices all three outcomes, and the overround (their margin) is spread across them. 1X2 is the backbone of most football accumulators because it is easy to understand and available on every match.
When using match result in an acca, focus on games where one outcome is strongly favoured. Backing a strong home side in a winnable fixture at 1.60-1.80 is a solid acca leg - better value than squeezing in a 1.20 shot. See our win accumulator tips for daily selections.
Both Teams to Score (BTTS)
Predict whether both teams will score at least one goal each, regardless of the final result. BTTS Yes / BTTS No are the two options. This market is extremely popular for accumulators because it does not require you to predict the winner - just whether the game will produce goals from both sides.
Games with attacking teams, leaky defences, or historical head-to-head records of both teams scoring are the places to look. Our BTTS tips are researched daily with these factors in mind.
Over/Under Goals
Bet on the total number of goals scored in a match going over or under a set line. The most common lines are 2.5 (a goal-heavy game) and 1.5. Over 2.5 Goals is particularly popular for accumulators - a game needs three or more goals for "Over" to win.
Factors that make over 2.5 more likely: attacking teams, poor defences, rivalry matches with something to play for, both teams needing a win. Check our Over 2.5 tips for games that fit this profile today.
Asian Handicap
Asian handicaps eliminate the draw by giving one team a head start in goals. A -1 Asian handicap on a team means they need to win by two or more goals for the bet to win. A +1 handicap means the team can lose by one goal and your bet still wins.
Because the draw is removed, Asian handicap typically offers better value than 1X2, particularly in competitive matches. The fractional Asian handicap (e.g. -0.75 or +1.25) splits your stake across two handicaps, further reducing risk.
Correct Score
Predict the exact final score. The highest-odds market in football - a 1-0 home win might be priced at 6.00 or 7.00, a 2-1 at 9.00-12.00. Because exact scores are hard to predict, correct score accumulators offer massive potential returns but have a very low hit rate.
If you want to try correct score accumulators, focus on low-scoring games between strong defensive teams where a 1-0 or 0-0 result is realistic. See our correct score tips for today's selections.
First/Anytime Goalscorer
Back a specific player to score the first goal or to score at any point during the match. Anytime scorer is easier to land than first scorer and therefore shorter odds. Adding two or three goalscorer picks to an acca quickly creates very large combined odds - and the risk to match.
In-form strikers who take penalties or get plenty of touches in the box are the best selections. Our goalscorer tips focus on players with the best scoring form and opportunity.
Half-Time / Full-Time
Predict the result at both half-time and full-time. There are nine possible combinations: Home/Home, Home/Draw, Home/Away, Draw/Home, Draw/Draw, Draw/Away, Away/Home, Away/Draw, Away/Away. This market offers inflated odds because you need to get two results right, making it attractive for accumulators at the cost of difficulty.
Double Chance
Covers two of the three match result outcomes in a single bet - for example, Home or Draw (1X), Away or Draw (X2), or either team to win (12). Double chance odds are lower than match result odds but significantly easier to land. Good for protecting a key acca leg when you are unsure between two outcomes.
Draw No Bet
Like a match result bet but with your stake refunded if the game ends in a draw. You only win if your chosen team wins outright. The downside is shorter odds than match result. Draw No Bet is useful for backing teams where a draw is a realistic third option that you want insurance against.
Corners, Cards and Specials
Markets on total corners, total bookings (cards), first or last corner, first yellow card and many more are available on most matches. These are more speculative but can add variety to your betting, particularly for in-play betting where you can react to the game developing.
