Calculate your each-way bet returns based on stake, odds, place fraction and finish position.

How Each-Way Betting Works

An each-way bet is really two bets in one: a win bet and a place bet, each at your stated stake. Total outlay = stake x 2. The win part pays out at full odds if your selection wins. The place part pays out at a fraction of the win odds (typically 1/4 or 1/5) if your selection finishes within the stipulated number of places.

Place Fractions Explained

The place fraction determines the place odds relative to the win odds. If win odds are 8.00 (7/1) and the place fraction is 1/4, then place odds = 1 + (7 x 0.25) = 2.75. A 5 each-way bet means 5 win + 5 place = 10 total. If the selection wins: win return = 5 x 8.00 = 40, plus place return = 5 x 2.75 = 13.75. Total = 53.75, profit = 43.75.

When Each-Way Betting Makes Sense

Each-way betting is most valuable on longer-priced selections in fields with multiple placers. A 10/1 shot each-way in a 16-runner race with four places offers the chance to return profit even without winning. At shorter prices (under 5/1 or so), the place fraction does not compensate adequately for the extra outlay.

Football outright markets (Top 4 finish, Golden Boot, League Winner) are increasingly offered each-way. The glossary entry for each-way covers the basics, and our betting markets guide includes outright and special markets.
