Bet builders and correlation: why standalone prices do not multiply

Same-match selections can overlap, depend on each other or be impossible together. The bookmaker must quote the actual combination.

A same-match builder is not just a cross-match accumulator with a shorter fixture list. Its selections can describe overlapping parts of the same result, so counting more selections does not necessarily add a distinct condition or justify a larger price.

Betfair describes a Bet Builder as combining different markets within one event and displaying updated prices as selections are added in its product explanation. The combined quote matters; a list of standalone market prices is not a substitute for it.

Independence is the dividing line

Two events are independent when knowing that one occurred does not change the probability of the other, according to Penn State's probability lesson. Only under that independence condition does multiplying their separate probabilities give the probability of both.

The general rule instead multiplies the probability of the first event by the probability of the second given the first, as set out in the same conditional-probability explanation. In plain English, ask whether your assessment of the second selection changes once you know the first has landed.

A hypothetical conditional example

Imagine a model assigns a home win a 50% chance and over 2.5 goals a 45% chance. Now suppose that, within the model's home-win outcomes, 60% also contain over 2.5 goals; these invented inputs are for teaching, not a football forecast.

The final number is only the reciprocal of our invented joint probability. It is not a bettable builder price, and it excludes bookmaker margin, commercial pricing and settlement terms.

Equally, the example does not establish that home wins and high totals always have this relationship. A different joint model could produce a different conditional chance; the point is that standalone inputs cannot settle that question.

Spot redundancy and contradiction

For matching full-time scoring rules, Both Teams to Score Yes logically entails at least two goals because each team must score at least once. Over 1.5 Goals therefore adds no new scoring condition to BTTS Yes; adding it does not create an independent reason to expect a bigger return.

By contrast, a home win and Under 0.5 Goals cannot both be true for the same scoring period. A scoreless result is a draw, so that proposed combination is contradictory rather than merely correlated.

A home win with BTTS Yes is a distinct combined condition: our illustrative 2-1 score satisfies both, while 1-0 satisfies only the win and 1-1 satisfies only BTTS. None of those examples supplies the probabilities needed to price the combination.

Why the actual builder quote is essential

Paddy Power's general betting rules distinguish related contingencies from ordinary multiples and make an exception when selections are chosen as a Bet Builder. That is an operator-specific rule, not permission to assume every bookmaker accepts every combination.

On Football Accumulators, an Unpriced builder is an idea without a verified combined bookmaker quote. We therefore withhold combined odds, returns, probability and edge claims; the displayed component prices are standalone market snapshots, as explained in our methodology.

A practical builder check

  • Define each condition: use the same match, scoring period and settlement basis when checking overlap.
  • Remove redundant ideas: do not count an already-implied condition as extra value.
  • Read the grouping: three separate match-builder suggestions are not automatically one six-selection accumulator.
  • Require an accepted quote: verify the precise combination and rules with the bookmaker rather than multiplying standalone prices.

Use the acca builder as an inspection tool, not proof that a bookmaker accepts a same-game combination. For ordinary cross-match payout arithmetic, return to odds and returns; for the assumptions behind multiplying chances, read implied probability.
